Greetings,Novice Prayer Program Yankton Benedictines Sacred Heart Monastery Sisters

With joy we welcomed Theresa into the Novitiate during our Vespers prayer on Sunday evening.  The sisters gathered in Chapel and began with a hymn that reflects the Prologue of St. Benedict and his invitation to all who might be seeking God…

Who among you longs for life? Who among you seeks good days?
Who would dwell within God’s tent, in God’s presence offer praise?
I am she who longs for life. I am she who seeks good days.
I would dwell within God’s tent, in God’s presence offer praise.
(opening hymn ~ Delores Dufner, OSB)

After the Psalmody and Scripture, Sister Penny invited Postulant Theresa to come forward.

Come, children, hear Me:  I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

The ritual of Entrance into the Novitiate includes a reminder and challenge by the prioress.  Sr. Penny reminded Theresa that the novice is to “continue to strengthen her relationship with God and the Church in this monastic community.”  The time of the novitiate will help her focus on this relationship with God and with the community. The challenge that “you will be tested to see if you truly seek God, if you show eagerness for the Work of God, for obedience and for trials” also comes from Benedict’s Rule .”  However, the Novice doesn’t live this challenge on her own.  The Prioress next called on Sister Sharon Ann, director of novices, to come forward “to accept the responsibility for guiding and supporting” her.  Finally, Sr. Penny looked out to the community and asked us to promise our prayerful support for both Novice Theresa and Sr. Sharon Ann.

After that let her live in the novitiate, where the novices study, eat and sleep.
A senior shall be assigned to them who is skilled in winning souls, to watch over them with the utmost care.
Let her examine whether the novice is truly seeking God, and whether she is zealous for the Work of God, for obedience and for trials.
Let the novice be told all the hard and rugged ways by which the journey to God is made (Rule of Benedict Chapter 58).

Please join us in praying for Novice Theresa as she continues to discern God’s call in her life throughout this year of the Novitiate.

Blessings to you,
