Sacred Heart Monastery is not receiving guests until further notice.
This retreat is cancelled; we plan to reschedule once it is safe to do so.
We will keep updating information on this page to let you know the status.
If you desire to deepen your prayer life, this Introduction to Centering Prayer workshop is an answer to your prayer. It will be led by persons training with Contemplative Outreach, using the revered approach taught by Trappist monks Thomas Keating and his associates. Our retreat leaders will be Irene Chang and Deacon Dennis Davis. This Centering Prayer workshop is open to Christians of all denominations.
The Centering Prayer workshop will be held at the
Benedictine Peace Center, Sacred Heart Monastery, Yankton, South Dakota,
Saturday, April 18, 2020, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Please register for this event by April 10. A free-will offering will be appreciated. To reserve space, contact us via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org, or call (605) 668-6292.
Contemplative Outreach describes Centering Prayer as “a receptive method of silent prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplative prayer, prayer in which we experience God’s presence within us, closer than breathing, closer than thinking, closer than consciousness itself. This method of prayer is both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. Centering Prayer is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer. Rather, it adds depth of meaning to all prayer and facilitates the movement from more active modes of prayer – verbal, mental or affective prayer – into a receptive prayer of resting in God. Centering Prayer emphasizes prayer as a personal relationship with God and as a movement beyond conversation with Christ to communion with Christ.”
You are welcome to join the monastic community for Morning Prayer at 8:30 a.m. in the Peace Chapel. If you are driving in from a distance, contact us about the possibility of extending your stay at the retreat center.
