How To Become An Oblate
How to Become an Oblate
Oblates are always connected to a Benedictine monastery, because relationships and community are integral to Benedictine spirituality. Sacred Heart Monastery has several Oblate Chapters so that Oblates can gather for prayer, learning, and supportive community. Sacred Heart Monastery welcomes men and women, Christians of all faiths to associate with us an an Oblate.
Comparable to the formation of a monk, an Oblate may come to Oblate meetings, talk to the Oblate director, and study to discern if this is where God is leading him or her for spiritual growth. When ready, the person discusses this with the Oblate director, and enters into a formal period of formation, which usually lasts a year. At that point, if the person and the director feel that they are ready, the person profess their oblation in a formal ceremony.
New Oblate orientations are held annually on the third February for the Yankton and Sioux Falls Chapters. The Nebraska chapters hold orientation in the late summer.
Next opportunity is February 19th at 1:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Monastery.
