Reflections from 2017 Advent Retreat, The Joys of Mary
Our Advent Retreat was held Saturday morning, December 9, 2017. Sorry you missed it! As soon as a date is set for 2018, we’ll announce it on this page.
In the meantime, we share some of our thoughts from this morning of reflection.
The approach of Christmas brings with it thoughts of birth and parenting. The Scriptural stories from the Gospel of Luke used for meditation in praying the “Joyful Mysteries” of the traditional Catholic rosary gave us the framework for our Advent Retreat,
“The Joys of Mary,” at the Benedictine Peace Center. Consider meditating on
- Gabriel’s announcement of the Savior’s birth to Mary—as we prayerfully meditate on the Gospel story
- Mary’s visit to Elizabeth—and our own response of praise to God
- the birth of Jesus—as we reflect on several Nativity paintings
- Mary’s experience as a parent in presenting the infant Jesus in the temple, and, twelve years later, in finding her lost son teaching in the temple—as we gain wisdom from Mary and one another in our own vocation of parenting.

The Advent retreats at the Benedictine Peace Center always remind me that this is a season of waiting in hope and expectation.
I am invited to be still and listen for Christ’s growing presence in my life.Kristi Gullickson
